History of FCTE

According to existing records, the first statewide meeting of English teachers in Florida occurred in 1922 as a section meeting of the Florida Education Association. By 1924, a group had been organized and affiliated with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Since that time, the Florida Council of Teachers of English (FCTE) has grown and developed into a major professional organization representing the English teachers of Florida. The Council's work continues to address the following purposes of the organization as stated in the original 1973 Constitution and in Article II in the current Articles of Incorporation.

The purposes of this organization are to

1. Provide opportunities for continued professional growth to teachers of English at all levels,

2. Promote an action program that will help to achieve the most favorable conditions possible for instruction in English in the State of Florida,

3. Work for the continual upgrading of standards in the profession by encouraging improved teacher education programs and improved certification requirements,

4. Provide opportunities for group study and discussion of professional problems which confront the English teachers of the State of Florida,

5. Disseminate through regular and special publications information of both a scholarly and topical nature that is of special significance to teachers of English,

6. Cooperate with national and other regional professional educational organizations toward achieving common goals.

About FCTE

FCTE is a non-profit organization promoting knowledge, communication, and cooperation among those responsible for teaching English and Language Arts in Florida. All Florida Educators wishing to engage in our mission are encouraged to join FCTE. It is our hope that FCTE serves as a resource for English teachers throughout the state who are looking for more information about "their" professional organization, searching for good teaching ideas, looking for professional development information, or just hoping to find friends and colleagues who share similar interests. Also, if you have an instructional blog or website that you would like to showcase, post your URL to "Teacher's Corner" and it will be included. Furthermore, if you have student work samples, or students have ideas they would like to see assigned to English classes, etc. please post the link or the information under "Teacher's Pet."

It is our hope that you will find this blog a refreshing look at the world of English and teaching, and think of it as your "go to guide" when you're in need or simply surfing the web.

A Note About SLATE

English teachers in Florida are faced with numerous challenges in educating today’s youth. In addition to classroom issues that may arise, teachers also find themselves under increasing moral and legal scrutiny.

In an effort to assist those who seek a clearer professional response to these dilemmas, NCTE's position statements will be a good place to start. To further assist, a Google group - FCTE SLATE - has been created for teachers to discuss and query colleagues, professionals, and others regarding issues of importance to SLATE - Support for the Learning and Teaching of English.
